Disability Rehabilitation Center (DDRC)
This Disability Rehabilitation center was started on March 29, 1983 as a rural rehabilitation facility on a pilot basis through the All-India Institute of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Mumbai, to develop the latent strengths of the visually impaired, Locomotor disable, deaf, mentally retarded and leprosy-free disabled persons of the society, not looking at their disability but at their strengths. The project was conducted at Primary Health Centre, Virar. The project was approved in March 1985 under the District Rehabilitation Center Scheme of the Ministry of Welfare, Government of India. Wide G.R Dated 12th Jule,2007 issued by Social Justice and Special Assistance Department this project was taken up on the establishment of state of Maharashtra since 01.04.2006 and has been extended its scope to the whole state of Maharashtra. Through this center, efforts are made to rehabilitate physically, mentally, socially and vocationally disabled persons of all types (handicapped, deaf, dumb, mentally retarded and blind). The center offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, reading and hearing therapy, psychologists, social services, business guidance, mobility training, workshops for making prostheses and assistive materials, canvas making Various such divisions are functioning.
Objectives of the Centre:
- Wide G.R Dated 12th July, 2007 issued by Social Justice and Special Assistance Department the jurisdiction of the Center extends to the entire State of Maharashtra.
- Taking measures to create awareness in the society to increase positive attitude towards the disabled person in the society in terms of disability rehabilitation.
- To promote sensitive information among the public about the rehabilitation of disabled and Disability preventive measures, early disability detection and diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation services.
- Taking care of children at home after disability and guiding parents about rehabilitation services.
- Supplying artificial limbs and assistive devices for physical rehabilitation to disabled persons as required and providing training on how to use them by providing surgical referral services as required.
- Providing information and guidance regarding different schemes, facilitiesconcessions, reservations etc. available to differently abled persons.
- Providing business guidance, services for vocational rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. Also providing information on various schemes available for financial/loan assistance to start a business.
- Providing Physical and occupational therapy for disabled persons, Hearing and reading impairment therapy, Psychotherapy therapy, Mobility training for blind persons etc.
- Organizing short term training programs for Anganwadi workers, teachers, health workers, nurses, medical officers in terms of disability prevention and rehabilitation.
- To implement the schemes of Central Government or other departments on agency basis.
- To carry out the works assigned by the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department of the State Government and the Disability Welfare Commissionerate
from time to time.
