    DISTRICT DIVYANG  REHABILITATION CENTRE

    VIRAR, DIST.PALGHAR, MAHARASHTRA.

    The District Divyang  Rehabililtation Centre, Virar, Dist. Thane,  Maharashtra was started as Rural Rehabilitation Center of All India Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Mumbai, on 29th March 1983.  In 1985, this Center was upgraded to District Rehabilitation Centre by Ministry of Welfare, Government of India.

    As per the directives of  Ministry of Soicial Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, The District Divyang Rehabilitation Centre, Virar, Dist. Thane,  is taken over by the Government of Maharashtra w.e.f.1/4/2006  vide G.R. of Social Justice & Special Assistance Department No.Apang-2006/Pra.Kra.4/Sudhar-3 dated 12th July, 2007. The working  jurisdiction of  this Institute  is whole  Maharashtra.  This Center works under Administrative and financial  control of Social Justice & Special Assistance Deptt., M.S.

         The District Divyang Rehabilitation Centre caters to the various needs of all  types of disabled – the Orthopaedically disabled, the Deaf and the Speech impared, the Blind and the Mentally Retarded.

               The various departments which help the disabled in this Centre are:

    1. The Physio-therapy, the Occupational therapy for giving treatment through various execises,
    2. The Audiology and Speech Therapy Department.
    3. Social Work/Vocational Counselling/Psychology Deptt.,
    4.  Prosthetic & Orthotic Engineering deptt.,with a workshop for making the necessary braces, artificial limbs, crutches and other rehabilitation aids.

    To ensure that the services to reach the needy, the DRC conducts

    Various camps for community awareness about disabilities, their prevention and the services available.

       The services in this centre are free; however the rehabilitation aids like Calipers, crutches, artificial limbs, hearing aids etc. are charged at subsidized rates or given free, depending upon the income of the patient. The Aids & appliances were being provided to the needy disabled under the ADIP scheme till the Center exist  in  Central Government.   Since the Center is  taken over by State Government, the Grant for providing Aids & appliances is not yet received.  For this purpose, this office has sent proposal through Commissioner of Persons with Divyangs to State Government, which is under consideration of Govt.

    The objectives of this Centre is as follows:

    1. Creation of Community awareness about the disabled population and development of healthy attitudes within the community in order to seek community participation in the measures for the welfare of the disabled.
    2. Parent Counselling about the home care and management of the disabled child.
    3. Promote dissemination of information on prevention, early detection and referrals and possibilities of treatment of the disabled.
    4. Arragements for physical rehabilitation including medical and surgical intervention.
    5. Provision of vocational training for the disabled.
    6. Employment guidance and placement services both in integrated as well as sheltered conditions for the disabled.
    7. Prevention of impairments by immunization programmes early disease control, pre-natal care, supplementary nutrition, environmental sanitation etc. with community involvement.
    8. To lay the foundation of other such centres where comprehensive rehabilitation services will eventually be provided at the rural set up.
